How to Set Up a Private Island in Albion Online

Costs at each upgrade level, which buildings to place first, and a first-week plan to get income moving.

A private island is one of the few genuinely passive income sources in Albion Online. Once set up and stocked, daily upkeep takes 5 to 10 minutes and generates consistent silver whether you are actively playing or not. This guide covers the setup process from buying the island to completing your first breeding or farming cycle.

Buying and upgrading

Islands are purchased from the island merchant in any Royal City. The first island has a significant discount on upgrade costs. Subsequent islands cost considerably more per level.

At level 4 with 9 multipurpose plots you have enough space for a meaningful horse breeding or crop farming operation. Most players target level 4 or 5 as their permanent setup. Level 6 with 16 plots is the maximum and allows running multiple income types simultaneously — horses, wheat, and a laborer house.

The island planner on AlbionCrafter shows the upgrade cost at each level for both first-island and standard pricing before you commit.

Which buildings to place first

For horse breeding: place pastures first, then farm plots for wheat to feed them. A level 4 island with 3 pastures and 4 farm plots is the standard starter configuration — 27 horses and 36 wheat tiles.

For pure farming: fill all plots with farm plots and choose your crop type based on your Destiny Board progression. Wheat feeds horses. Higher-tier crops such as T6 Potato and T7 Corn have their own market value.

For laborer income: place houses and hire laborers who fill journals passively. This requires more upfront setup time but runs with almost no daily attention. The Island Laborers Guide covers this setup in detail.

The first week

  • Day 1: Buy foals or seeds from the market and stock your pastures or farm plots fully. If breeding horses, nurture each one immediately to use your focus on the first day
  • Days 2 and 3: Return once per day to nurture horses or water crops. A 27-horse operation uses roughly 2,700 to 4,700 focus per day depending on your Animal Breeder and Horse Breeder Destiny Board levels
  • Day 3 for T5 horses: First cycle completes. Sell raw horses or take them to a saddler before selling. Reinvest or bank profit depending on whether you are running self-sustaining mode or buying foals each cycle

The wheat question

27 horses consume roughly 820 wheat per day. 4 farm plots at 9 tiles each without focus produce around 162 wheat per day, a significant deficit. You will need to buy the shortfall from the market or expand your farm plots. The island planner calculates this deficit exactly for your layout and tells you how many additional farm plots you would need to become self-sufficient.

Simulate before you invest

The island planner lets you model any combination of plots, tiers, and market prices before spending silver on buildings or animals. Set up your planned layout, enter your server prices, and the simulator shows daily profit, break-even days, and wheat deficit before you commit a single silver.
