Refining is one of the most consistent silver-making activities in Albion Online because it connects two separate markets — raw resources and refined materials — and lets you profit from the gap. Whether refining is worth it depends on three things: the city you refine in, the tier you target, and whether you use focus.
Why refining profit exists
Players who gather raw resources often sell cheaply because they need silver fast. Players who craft endgame items pay a premium for refined materials because they are optimizing for time, not margin. The refiner sits in the middle, buying cheap raw and selling refined at a markup. The markup is your profit — minus the refining cost, which is where RRR and city bonuses matter.
City bonuses for refining
Each Royal City gives a 40% Resource Return Rate bonus for one material type when you refine there:
- Fort Sterling: Wood into Planks
- Bridgewatch: Fiber into Cloth
- Lymhurst: Hide into Leather
- Martlock: Ore into Metal Bars
- Thetford: Rock into Stone Blocks
A 40% return rate means for every 10 raw resources you put in, you get back 4 — so your effective raw cost drops significantly. Refining at the non-bonus city without focus means 0% return, making the margin much thinner or negative depending on the market spread.
Which tiers to target
T4 and T5 are often not worth self-refining — the raw materials are cheap enough that other players refine them at scale, compressing margins close to zero. T6 and T7 are typically the best tiers for individual refiners: the volume is lower, fewer players compete, and the raw-to-refined price gap is wider. T8 can be profitable but requires more capital and has less liquidity.
Check the current spread on your server before committing. The refining calculator shows your raw material requirement at any RRR setting — use that output to compare against current market prices. If the raw cost after effective RRR reduction is lower than the current refined sell price minus market tax, the trade is profitable.
Focus and break-even
Using focus while refining at a bonus city stacks with the city bonus and increases your effective RRR further. The exact focus cost depends on your Destiny Board level in the relevant branch. Higher levels mean lower focus cost per refining action.
When to buy refined instead
If you are a crafter rather than a dedicated refiner, buying refined directly is sometimes better than self-refining. This is true when the raw material price is unusually high due to a patch or event, your Destiny Board refining level is low giving you a high focus cost per action, or you are crafting a one-off batch where sourcing raw materials is not worth the margin.
